My students LOVE cooking days. This cooking activity with a pajama day brings a cozy change of scenery for speech therapy. Here are the visual supports I created for this theme.
Why use visual supports?
These themed visuals were beneficial for my high school students who were non-verbal and use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication), but anyone can benefit from this multimodal form of communication and language learning. Pair with real live objects and motivating tasks to enhance vocabulary and communication skills. Visual supports also make this cooking activity accessible to a wider population.
Visuals of this cooking activity and goal ideas to target:
Menu: expressing choices, ordering, taking turns, recall
Ingredients: vocabulary, identifying, categories, asking questions
Recipe: following directions, verbs, sequencing, commanding
Tips:
We use a single-serving mini waffle maker like this one
Great for group therapy, targeting social skills, expressive language, and life skills!
We had each student make their own waffles one by one, while the rest of the group called out next steps and directions for whole-class engagement
Let's be social!
